Donna Daley and Julie Halston Have A New Book!

DONNA DALEY AND JULIE HALSTON
“MONOLOGUES FOR SHOW-OFFS,”
74 ORIGINAL, NEW MONOLOGUES FOR ALL ACTORS
CREATED BY DONNA DALEY & JULIE HALSTON

Attention: All Actors. Prepare to SHOW OFF!
Monologues for Show-offs (Heinemann, 2008, Portsmouth, NH) was created by actor/writer/director Donna Daley and actress/writer/comedienne Julie Halston, two theater veterans who have written 74 fun, bold and brassy original monologues for men and women.
This book is every aspiring and established actor’s dream – that includes not only brand new monologues but helpful performance notes and smart advice on auditioning from top industry professionals. The book sells for $14.95 and can be purchased on any of the following websites: http://www.heinemanndrama.com/, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.barnesandnoble.com/.

“There’s a window of opportunity at your audition to dig in fast and show personality”, says Donna. “It’s important to establish the scene from the moment the actor speaks. Bold choices are built in. All the elements that help you pop.”
“Donna and I know from experience auditioning is tough enough,” says Julie. “But when an actor connects with something fresh and vibrant – everyone remembers you.”
Monologues for Show-offs has already been applauded by members of the industry, including authors, playwrights, actors, directors and producers.

“I love this book and recommend it to actors of all levels!”
Brian O’Neil, Acting as a Business: Strategies for Success

“Buy this Book! It is a clever mix of fresh and wildly inventive monologues. The casting call will never be the same. Producers rejoice! Laughter and joy returns to the audition!”
Jeff Sharp, Film Producer, Boys Don’t Cry

“Finally! Original monologues that are actually original. These gals know how to write sharp, witty material. The laughter and tears are all in the right places!
Charles Busch, Playwright/Actor

Donna Daley and Julie Halston have known each other for years and have collaborated on several projects before Monologues for Show-offs, among them the animated short Open Call and a new book for young people.
Donna Daley has worked extensively as an actor and writer. She is the co-author of Mama Drama (Samuel French), originally presented Off Broadway at the Ensemble Studio Theatre and the Cleveland Playhouse. She is represented in Best Scenes for the Nineties (Applause Theatre and Cinema Books). She developed and directed Beat: a Subway Cop’s Comedy that became the UPN sitcom Diresta. Her play The Misconception of Iggy was presented at Polaris North, MCC and The Actor’s Studio with Anne Meara. She developed and directed the NYC production of Stephanie Musnick’s one-woman show A Saint for All Wash Cycles, She was a contributing writer and created voices for such award winning animated series as Sky Dancers and Dragon Flyz on ABC, Vanpires on FOX and Happiness: The Secret of the Loch. She was a 2004 Writer in Residence at the New Harmony Project with her play deeply Shallow.

Julie Halston (http://www.juliehalston.com/) has appeared in numerous Broadway and Off Broadway shows , including Hairspray, Gypsy, Twentieth Century, The Women and The Vagina Monologues. A founding member of Charles Busch’s now-legendary company, Theatre-in-Limbo, she co-starred with Mr. Busch in many of their productions, including Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, The Lady in Question and Red Scare on Sunset. She wrote and starred in her own critically acclaimed show, Julie Halston’s Lifetime of Comedy, which led to a CBS development deal. Miss Halston has been the recipient of many award nominations, including the Drama Desk, The Outer Critic’s Circle and The Drama League. TV audiences have seen her as Tina Carmello on the CBS comedy The Class and Bitsy Von Muffling on Sex and the City. Her films include I Think I Love My Wife, The Juror, Small-Time Crooks, Addams Family Values and A Very Serious Person, which is shown regularly on Showtime.

It was pretty funny that I watched Julie on SEX AND THE CITY last night as Bitsy Von Muffling and got this release the following day! I can't wait to see her in the SEX AND THE CITY movie!

In the meantime, buy her book. You can also watch my interview with her at the IT AWARDS on my homepage!

GYPSY: NO GIMMICK NEEDED!

Last evening, I was fortunate to attend a press viewing of the classic Broadway treasure GYPSY! I saw the production this past summer at Encores.

The show is one of the greatest musicals in history. This cast was so exceptional that, I did not want the evening to end. Neither did the hecklers behind me. They screamed throughout the entire production. I know why they screamed, this cast was brilliant and LuPone is at the high point of her career. The role of Rose seems like it was written for LuPone. LuPone, Laura Benanti and Boyd Gaines all deserve nominations for this incredible production.

My only problem with the production was the sets and strange props. I usually love puppets but not in GYPSY! Why they used a stuffed toy dog and puppet lamb was strange. In the last Broadway production with Bernadette Peters they used a real baby lamb and it added a nice touch to this show. I could understand not using real animals in the Encores version but not in a Broadway run. That was my biggest problem with the show.

LuPone and this entire cast shine. It is a production that should not be missed. I just wish hecklers would shut up. I wanted to stuff a sock in their annoying mouth!

GYPSY is a Corine's pick and even though the low budget sets are a problem, it does not take away from the masterpiece on Broadway called GYPSY. It is a must see regardless of the minimal sets. The actors and fabulous book make it one of the most enjoyable nights of theater that I have seen in my entire life. Get tickets: http://www.gypsyonbroadway.com/

Corine's Corner Raves About Valerie Fagan Of Forbidden Broadway Rude Awakening!

I was fortunate to see Forbidden Broadway this afternoon. The show sadly will close and tour and it wont be back until mid June. I had to have my last fix (yes, I admit to being a Forbidden Broadway junkie) Some people are hooked on cigars, others drink and I see FB when I want to laugh.

The rest of the cast is touring till June so check your listings to see if the show is coming to your town. If you can see it in New York it will run till this Monday!

Corine's Corner raves about Valerie Fagan.

Val Fagan is on fire. Her Merman is spot on and her Le Miz number 'On My Phone' is beyond brilliant. Her voice is very strong even when she has a cold. Her performance never ceases to amaze me. I also adore her JLY. It is very funny.

Val Fagan is a star and needs to be discovered! Fagan is a triple threat and can sing, dance and her Merman is spot on. She should be a diva but is missing the diva attitude.

Interview with Debra Ehrhardt Playwright and Star of Jamaica Farewell!

Corine Cohen Debra, I was really impressed with the positive energy in the show. Was this all true? Or was any of the story made up to make an interesting play?

Debra Ehrhardt: 95 percent of the story is true; I had to dramatize certain scenes to enhance the drama – and comedy (Any writer worthy of the pen, typewriter – or laptop computer they use - does this).Take for example, when I first met the CIA Agent, the first time an agent meets someone they would never tell them right that they work for the CIA. But I must say that these are facts: political violence in Jamaica; and the CIA there to do what they do best - or worse.

Corine Cohen. Sad to hear that! Now that you live in The United States are you sad that you left Jamaica? I mean we don't have the beautiful beaches here. I guess we have The Hamptons but it is not the same!

Debra Ehrhardt: Hey, I return two to three times a year! Yes. Jamaican beaches are incredible!....

Corine Cohen: They are! I used to work with The Jamaican Tourist Board! You say you are multi-racial. What do you mean by that? Is your Mother white and your father was Jamaican?

Debra Ehrhardt: My ancestry is English, Spanish Jewish and Black. Most people living outside of Jamaica think for some reason Jamaicans only have dark-skin. Our motto is “Out of Many – One People.” Jamaicans have a rich history: Africa, Asia, India, Europe. Go to Jamaica now and you can see all this in play, in the racial composition of my people, in the food, and in the language.

Corine Cohen: I have been to Jamaica a few times, it is a beautiful place to visit. Do you visit any family there now and if so what ever happened to the rest of your friends?

Debra Ehrhardt: I enjoy going to Jamaica at least three times a year and still have many family and friends who couldn’t get a visa or who just didn’t want to leave. I see them every time I return and we just pick up where we left off!

Corine Cohen:Do you plan on writing any more plays?

Debra Ehrhardt:Yeah, man! (A popular Jamaican phrase)

Corine Cohen: Laughs! What do you want to do next? Jamaica, Farewell the TV film?

Debra Ehrhardt: I would like to do more plays. I like the live audience interaction. Each day it brings something new and exciting.

However, I would like to see Jamaica Farewell turned into a movie. I will be too old to play the lead. But I might play my mother. How weird is that?...LOL!

Speaking of TV and movies I wouldn’t mind doing that kind of work. I hear there’s a screenwriter from Jamaica working on a script for me….Is this a rumor or a fact? Gotta’ check it out!

Corine Cohen: Did you want to get married and have kids and would you ever want to go back to the Islands to live?

Debra Ehrhardt: Ok, two questions here: One - I am married to a wonderful Italian guy and I have two gorgeous kids! All I do is for them. I want them to look to me to be their role model! I want them to see me struggle and fight for what it is I want in life. I want them to learn from my life story…that you must be proactive in life if you want something badly enough.

(would you ever want to go back to the Islands to live?)

Two – Yeah, man. Jamaica irie ( Irie= anything positive, nice, good, etc) My hope is
to retire there on a quiet beach somewhere…

Corine Cohen: Yeah, man! Does your Mother like the states and did she come and see the show?

Debra Ehrhardt: My mother loves living in America and she has seen the show. She’s still very Jamaican in that she’s a little embarrassed that I’m telling my story to the world. I ask her, ‘Mom what are they going to do with the information?” But Jamaicans are very private people and will always put on a smile even if their hearts are breaking because appearances are everything. Upon hearing the compulsion to share my story, my slightly distressed mother insisted upon a few key name changes so that the integrity of the family would not be infringed. She begged me not to put her name in any newspaper or ever introduce her at any of the performances, preferring to stay incognito!

Thank you for the interview Debra and thank you for your passionate and interesting play.

BROADWAY BY THE YEAR 1954

A musical snapshot of 1954 Broadway celebrating songs from
The Pajama Game, Peter Pan, The Boy Friend, Fanny, The Golden Apple,
House of Flowers, and more!

Created, written and hosted for The Town Hall by Scott Siegel

Sierra Boggess and Sean Palmer, the stars of Disney’s The Little Mermaid will make their Town Hall debuts with THE BROADWAY MUSICALS OF 1954 on Monday, April 7 at 8 pm. The Town Hall’s critically acclaimed Broadway by the Year® series presents a musical snapshot of 1954, featuring songs and dances from The Pajama Game, Peter Pan, The Boy Friend, Fanny, The Golden Apple, House of Flowers, and more! Scott Coulter will direct the show with musical direction by Ross Patterson.

This one-night-only concert will also feature a dazzling line-up of Broadway/ Cabaret stars including Emily Skinner (The Full Monty/Side Show), Noah Racey (Curtains), Cheyenne Jackson (Xanadu), Kendrick Jones (Encores! Stairway to Paradise), Scott Coulter (The Stephen Schwartz Show) and from Disney’s The Little Mermaid: Sierra Boggess and Sean Palmer.

1954 on Broadway was special because it marked the debut of the composing team of Adler and Ross and their The Pajama Game, the first of many musicals produced by Harold Prince. This was also the year that Julie Andrews made her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend, David Merrick produced his first musical - Harold Rome’s Fanny, and Mary Martin made flying history with her unforgettable Peter Pan.

“This is the first time we’ve had – at the same time – the two leads from a new Broadway show,” said series creator Scott Siegel. “I am thrilled we were able to get both Sierra Boggess and Sean Palmer (Ariel and the Prince) from The Little Mermaid, not just because they are terrific talents but because they are perfect for the material we’re presenting from 1954. They’ll be joining another newcomer to Broadway by the Year®, Cheyenne Jackson, who is currently starring in the smash Broadway hit, Xanadu. Sierra, Sean, and Cheyenne will join Broadway by the Year® much-beloved veterans Emily Skinner, Noah Racey, Kendrick Jones, and Scott Coulter – with Scott Coulter directing. Also featured in the concert will be one of New York’s great young dancers, Melinda Sullivan, who will be dancing with Noah Racey. And I’ve only just started building what I intend to be another all-star cast,” Siegel declared. “In other words, keep an eye out for yet more great names to be added to this list of performers.”

"We're thrilled to present the second show in this, the eighth season of our Broadway By The Year® series," said Lawrence C. Zucker, The Town Hall Executive & Artistic Director. "With such a wide selection to choose from – well known shows, and lesser known-ones, we're sure audiences will have another great night of pure entertainment at The Town Hall."

Tickets are $50 & $45 and on sale now through TicketMaster, 212-307-4100, www.ticketmaster.com, The Town Hall Box Office between noon and 6 PM (except Sundays) at 123 West 43rd Street, 212-840-2824. For more information: www.the-townhall-nyc.org.

Sarah Stiles- Avenue Q!

I have seen every new cast member in the Broadway version of Avenue Q. Yesterday, I decided to see it's newest cast member, Sarah Stiles. I went to the lotto and won and was very happy I did. The show is as strong as ever and Sarah was wonderful in the role. She might not be slightly overweight like the Kate Monster character but she puts on an incredible performance as Kate Monster and Lucy T. Slut. I was very impressed.

Avenue Q is a must see show. Jennifer Barnhart is the only remaining original cast member and is incredible as always. I adore Avenue Q, hope you will adore it as much as I do. It was my 7th time and it never stops entertaining and touching me.

Following Chicago, the show will play a second city (TBA) before hitting a Broadway theater this Fall. What do you think of that?!!! Li'l ol' me in a one-man show on BROADWAY!

RUSSIAN ON THE SIDE is a piece I’m immensely proud of. A zany, 90-minute journey from Stravinsky to Sondheim, it’s filled with music from celebrated American songwriters matched with hilarious stories abut the world’s greatest (and some of the craziest) composers. If this rings a bell, you may recall my earlier show Tschaikowsky (and Other Russians), that most recently played Philadelphia and was previously recorded at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. RUSSIAN ON THE SIDE is an expanded version of that show, that we’ve been tailoring specifically with an eye towards Broadway.

"We?" I hear you ask, "who is WE?" Well, I’m extremely pleased to announce that the amazing theater director Mark Waldrop has joined the RUSSIAN team. Mark co-wrote and directed WHEN PIGS FLY and also directed Bea Arthur on Broadway a few seasons back. He's worked on and Off-Broadway and around the country, and even served as Production Supervisor for Bette Midler’s DIVINE MISS MILLENNIUM TOUR.
The set is being designed by the amazing David Korins who is currently represented on Broadway by PASSING STRANGE. His resumé is as long as your arm and I couldn't be more proud that he's on the team.

The head of the team is the brilliant (well he chose my show -- of course he's brilliant!) young Broadway and film producer, Michael Alden. Michael's most recent shows on Broadway were GREY GARDENS and before that, BRIDGE AND TUNNEL.

So whether this is your first serving of RUSSIAN, or you’re coming back for seconds, I guarantee a great night of song, hilarity, thought-provoking ideas and some serious ivory-tickling. I hope to see you in Chicago as my journey to the Great White Way begins!

96,000 REASONS TO VISIT IN THE HEIGHTS!

(Photo from In The Heights site)

I could give you 96,000 reasons to see IN THE HEIGHTS but it is late, and I am tired. Instead, I will tell you that when I saw the show off broadway, I saw it early in the production and the passion and music did not have the same power as the show I saw this evening.

Here are some thoughts about the show. Stay tuned for a special voice recording of my thoughts soon.

1. The choreography is sizzling! My favorite part about this show was the dancers. The Latin beat and fabulous dancing was so uplifting it was hard not dancing in my chair. The energy and raw talent of these dancers was in a separate league from most Broadway musicals.

2. The passion and chemistry between the actors was contagious and I did not want the show to end.

3. If you are sick of dysfunction and despair on Broadway (and Off) this show will make you laugh, cry and care for the charismatic characters on the stage. You can't help feeling for these characters and rooting for them to succeed.

This show is steamy, sexy, sensual, smart and a must see for any theater lover that is moved by a show with heart. It is a very entertaining and passionate show!
Conceived by Lin -Manuel Miranda. Book by Quiara Alegria' and Choregraphed by Andy Blankenbuehler.
