A Brief History of the Theatre World Award

The Theatre World Awards are presented annually in the spring to six actors and six actresses for their debut performances in a Broadway or Off-Broadway production. The ceremony is an invitation-only event followed by an afternoon party to celebrate the twelve new honorees and welcome them to the Theatre World "family." In what has become a highly entertaining and often touching tradition, former winners present awards to the new honorees, often reliving moments from past ceremonies and sharing wonderful stories rarely heard at other theatrical award ceremonies.

In 1944, three young men who loved theatre, Daniel Blum, Norman McDonald, and John Willis, came up with the idea of a yearly celebration that would acknowledge "Promising Personalities," — twelve debut performances by actors appearing on Broadway. In the beginning, the awards ceremony was a simple cocktail party among friends in Daniel Blum's sumptuous apartment, with Blum presenting the award. In the first two years alone, actors saluted for their debut performances included Betty Comden, Judy Holliday, and John Raitt, joined the following year by Barbara Bel Geddes, Marlon Brando, and Burt Lancaster, among others.

At the 1949 party, Carol Channing won. A couple of years later she said to other winners who were all attending a cocktail party prior to the one at Daniel's, "We'd better get over to Daniel's and support that Award because otherwise, no one is gonna know who we are sixty years from now."

As Off-Broadway became a potent force in New York theatre life, performances there became eligible for recognition as well as those on Broadway. It wasn’t until 1969 that the award became known officially as the Theatre World Award. The first awards were in the form of a framed certificate and later, a plaque. The beautiful bronze Janus Award, sculpted by internationally recognized sculptor Harry Marinsky, made its debut at the 1973 Theatre World Awards ceremony, and is still used today.

Upon Daniel Blum's death in 1964, John Willis inherited the entire responsibility for the Award. For the next 30 years, with an occasional assistant, he single-handedly kept the Theatre World Awards alive by hosting the annual party, often with Carol Channing acting as the sole presenter as late as 1971. Then Robert Morse, Colleen Dewhurst, Julie Harris, and Rosemary Harris served as presenters over the next 5 years. At the 1976 ceremony, John invited twelve former winners and each in turn presented to a newcomer. And thus began the ritual of presenters entertaining the audience with anecdotes about how they won or what the Award had come to mean to them.

The Theatre World Awards are now voted on by a committee, which includes Peter Filichia and six other New York theatre critics. The Awards are administered by a Board of Directors, who also serve as the producers and directors of the annual event. Every year, the ceremony is supported by previous winners, producers, and friends of the Awards, who generously contribute time and funds to bring the ceremony to fruition. John Willis, 92 years young, will, as always, be in attendance.

At the same time that Blum and Willis created their award, they also began the Theatre Worldpublication. It evolved into the most comprehensive annual pictorial and statistical record of the American theatre. It includes not only the Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway season, but that of the regional theatres, major theatrical awards, and complete coverage of the Theatre World Awards ceremony as well.

THE LEGEND MARILYN MAYE!!!!!!

MARILYN MAYE MAKES MERRY WITH MERCER IN BRAND NEW SHOW AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

“MERCER THE MAYE WAY” PREMIERES FRIDAY JUNE 12

As she engineers one of the most exciting late-career surges ever seen, the unstoppable Marilyn Maye pays tribute to the great wordsmith Johnny Mercer in a brand new show that opens at the Metropolitan Room on Friday June 12 at 7:30pm. Maye, in her sixth Metropolitan Room show (and eighth engagement) since she her triumphant return to New York in late 2006 (after a 16-year Gotham hiatus), premieres “Mercer the Maye Way,” which plays a total of 9 times through June 21.

Maye’s Mercer medley celebrates the prolific lyricist’s gift for artfully encapsulating so much with seemingly so little. According to Maye his contributions to the Great American Songbook (and American vernacular) are so seminal as to seem ingrained in our collective unconscious. Tedd Firth leads her three-piece band that includes Jim Eklof (her drummer for more than 40 years) and Tom Hubbard on bass. The show marks the centenary of Mercer’s his birth.

Since turning up at the Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention at Lincoln Center (and playing an SRO one-night stand at The Metropolitan Room) in 2006, Maye has been showered with awards. She’s earned Nightlife Awards (Outstanding Cabaret Vocalist in a Major Engagement) in two consecutive years (2008 & 2009), a 2008 Back Stage Bistro Award (Lifetime Achievement) and, this month, she nabbed her first MAC Award in the Celebrity Artist=0 Acategory.

A Kansas City native and resident, Maye was nominated for a best new artist Grammy in 1965, going up against Tom Jones, Herman's Hermits, Sonny & Cher, Horst Jankowski and The Byrds. As an RCA recording artist she had seven albums and 34 singles, introducing numerous hits including "Cabaret," "Step to the Rear," "Sherry," "Too Late Now," and "If My Friends Could See Me Now." "Too Late Now" was picked by The Smithsonian as one of the 100 best recordings of the 20th century.

Johnny Carson called her "one of the best singers in the business, outstanding, a super singer!" She appeared a total of 76 times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (the most by a singer), both in New York and Burbank. Only The Amazing Kreskin appeared on the program more than Maye.

“Mercer the Maye Way” performs 9 times from Friday June 12 to Sunday June 21 (every day with the exception of Thursday June 18), as follows: June 12, 13, 17, 19, 20 at 7:30pm and June 14, 15, 16, 21 at 7pm. Maye’s music charge is $30. For reservations call 212/206-0440 or visit http://www.metropolitanroom.com/. Rated "Best of New York" by New York Magazine, the Nightlife and Bistro Award-winning Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, celebrated its third anniversary on May 11.

ANN HARADA RETURNS TO AVENUE Q ON JULY 6!

AVENUE Q's original "Christmas Eve" ANN HARADA returns to the Broadway cast July 6th.

Stars of the AVENUE Q U.S. National Tour also join the Broadway cast on July 6th. ROB McCLURE, ANIKA LARSEN and DANIELLE K. THOMAS.

While ,I am very happy that Ann Harada is joining the cast, I must admit to being sad about Carey Anderson leaving the role of Kate Monster/Lucy. She happened to be my favorite of all the Kate Monsters. (Please don't get me wrong I have loved all!)

Just weeks prior to the Tony Award-winning musical AVENUE Q's 6th anniversary on Broadway, one of the stars of the original cast, Ann Harada, will return to the role of "Christmas Eve" starting Monday, July 6th at the John Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street) in New York City.

On July 6th, Ms. Harada -- who created the role on Broadway and played "Christmas Eve" in the London production -- will be joined in the Broadway cast by members of the U.S. national tour of AVENUE Q, which recently concluded a phenomenally successful two-year run: starting July 6th, Robert McClure will assume the roles of Princeton/Rod on Broadway, along with Anika Larsen as Kate Monster/Lucy the Slut, and Danielle K. Thomas as Gary Coleman.AVENUE Q marks its 6th anniversary on Broadway on July 31, 2009. The musical began previews on Broadway on July 14, 2003, opened on July 31, 2003, and went on to win three 2004 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book of a Musical.Having played over 2,400 performances, AVENUE Q recently became the 21st longest-running show in Broadway history, having surpassed such landmark musicals as SOUTH PACIFIC, PIPPIN, OKLAHOMA, MAN OF LA MANCHA and ANNIE. A musical about 20-somethings, fresh out of college, who move to the city with big dreams and tiny bank accounts, AVENUE Q has music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty and is directed by Jason Moore.

AVENUE Q is produced by Kevin McCollum, Robyn Goodman, Jeffrey Seller, The Vineyard Theatre and The New Group. Based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, with puppets conceived and designed by Rick Lyon, AVENUE Q has musical supervision by Stephen Oremus, choreography by Ken Roberson, scenic design by Anna Louizos, costume design by Mirena Rada, lighting design by Howell Binkley and sound design by Acme Sound Partners.Christian Anderson, Jennifer Barnhart, and Nicholas Kohn will continue in the cast of AVENUE Q.

Ann Harada's Broadway credits include 9 TO 5, the 2007 revival of LES MISERABLES, M. BUTTERFLY and SEUSSICAL.Robert McClure was previously featured in the Broadway cast of AVENUE Q in the roles of Nicky/Trekkie Monster. He takes over the roles of Princeton/Rod having played both characters on the AVENUE Q tour. He also appeared on Broadway in the 2002 revival of I'M NOT RAPPAPORT.

Anika Larsen appeared on Broadway in XANADU, ALL SHOOK UP and RENT, and played the roles of Kate Monster/Lucy the Slut in the national tour of AVENUE Q. Danielle K. Thomas has appeared in touring productions of SEUSSICAL, BIG RIVER, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.For performance and ticket information to AVENUE Q, visit http://www.avenueq.com/ or call Tele-charge at 212-239-6200.

ITBA AWARDS!

REASONS TO BE PRETTY, BILLY ELLIOT, AND UNIVERSAL ROBOTS TAKE TOP HONORS IN FIRST EVER THEATER BLOGGER AWARDS

The Independent Theater Bloggers Association (http://www.theaterbloggers.com/) is thrilled to announce the winners of the first annual ITBA Awards for Excellence in Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway theater.

The ITBA (Independent Theater Bloggers Association) was formed in 2009 by a group of the most passionate theater bloggers on the World Wide Web (partial list below). The members of the Association blog about all aspects and all varieties of both commercial and non-profit theater, from big Broadway musicals performed in Times Square, to the most unique forms of entertainment performed off-off Broadway on the Lower East Side, as well as productions all over the country and all over the world. Together they see thousands of productions, and, without being paid or prodded, they write about them.
Ken Davenport, founder of the ITBA, said, “The Association was formed out of a desire to provide structure to the quickly growing theatrical blogosphere, as well as to give the new media voices a chance to recognize excellence in three of the very distinct theatrical markets that make up the New York City theatrical landscape: Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway.”

In true “new media” style, there will be no live awards ceremony for the ITBA Awards. Instead, there will be a virtual awards ceremony, with video acceptance speeches for the winners posted electronically in the coming weeks on ITBA’s website, http://www.theaterbloggers.com/.

This year’s winners of the ITBA Awards are as follows:

Do You Want To Have Fun?

With 15 Drama Desk nominations I went to see 9 To 5 and was expecting a masterpiece like say Billy Elliot. Is it a masterpiece? Nope. Is it an incredible cast, catchy songs, incredible performances, funny and charming, yes!

I had a great time at Dolly Parton's new musical which is based on the film. You can't help but have a great time even though it is not the deepest plot in the World.

It does have the most talented cast and all of them work well together to stop the evil boss from hell.

The three leads are all outstanding but the funniest moments are played by some of the smaller roles (Kathy Fitzgerald of The Producers,) Karen Murphy steals the show as the lush office worker with hysterical facial expressions and Ann Harada as an office worker who wears the first pants in a different era.

Nine to Five will appeal to tourists and women who want to have a fun evening at the theater. I give it 5 out of nine stars but a 10 for effort from the very talented cast.

Corine's Corner Loves Flip!

For the past year I purchased two flip camcorders. First, I bought the regular flip which taped for 30 minutes. Needing more time I purchased the Flip Mino which tapes 1 hour and has an internal battery that recharges when you download.

This past week flip came out with the Flip Ultra in HD (High density) It shoots for two hours and is in HD. I can't wait to shoot in HD.

HD films will be coming soon.

Corine's Corner loves all three of her flip camcorders. If you want one go here:

The FLIP ULTRA HD features:
2 hours of taping.
Video resolution HD 1280X720
Has 8 GB of built in memory.

Flip Camcorders are the official camcorder of Corine's Flip video series.

The newest Flip Ultra HD retails for $199 and is light enough to fit in a pocket or small purse and shoots in HD. Life is good.
