Supergroup David Poe and Friends performing soon!
New acts just added: Old Springs Pike and Jonathan Glickfeld!
Summer may be winding to a close according to your calendar, but not according to Spiegelworld! The marvel of old-school European architecture at the South Street Seaport is still going strong a month after opening. They’re adding new acts like crooner Jonathan Glickfeld, harmonizers Old Springs Pike.
Old Springs Pike – September 10 @ 10pm
OLD SPRINGS PIKE blends the cricket chirp of a suburban slow-fade with the subway scream of metropolitan mayhem. Using four part harmony as a diving board, these early twenty-somethings find themselves in stylistic depths ranging from a fair-paced folk to a rarely restrained roots rock. With an energetic, spontaneous live act, OLD SPRINGS PIKE proves that it’s not just a concert, but an event. OLD SPRINGS PIKE are James Cleare, Johnny Gallagher (2007 Tony Award winning performance in Spring Awakening,) Heather Robb and James Smith. On OSP’s unique sound, MTV raved "...They willingly embrace dissonance, and their execution is impeccable, from their tight, four-part, CSN-worthy vocal harmonies (no “pitchiness” here) to their wickedly intense percussive power, which featured everything from drums and cymbals to empty water bottles..." New York Magazine lovingly rejoiced, “They sing goofy, foot-stomping, and sometimes precociously moving songs in rich four-part harmony à la the Grateful Dead, as they whale away on guitars, mini-keyboards and melodicas…”
Penny Arcade’s BITCH! DYKE! FAGHAG! WHORE! Celebrating NYC Downtown Culture - September 11 @ 10:00pm
In 1990 Penny Arcade created the now legendary BITCH! DYKE! FAGHAG! WHORE!, her sex and censorship show, in response to the Senator Helms/National Endowment For The Arts censorship crisis. Now it returns in an exclusive Spiegeltent season for the first time in over a decade. Originally conceived as a 4 day audit for a NEA solo fellowship grant, it was a runaway success, fueled by what became known as The Drag Factor, as people returned over and over, dragging their friends, co-workers, neighbors and family to share the show and the show's cathartic audience dance break. A call for the separation of church and State, B!D!F!W! is a powerful critique of the Christian right as well as of the politically correct Left. A blend of outrageous humor, political humanism, freedom of expression and erotic dancing, Bitch! Dyke! Faghag! Whore! shocked NY's supposedly unshakeable downtown art scene with it's brazen use of strippers and erotic dancers and it's huge audience dance break. Are you ready for an epiphany?
David Poe and Friends – September 12 @ 10:00pm
In anticipation of his latest release 'Joy' and the completion of a new as-yet-unnamed supergroup studio recording, Poe and friends features the world premiere of an amazing group of New York luminaries: Tony Award-winner/Grammy nominee Duncan Sheik ("Barely Breathing" and the Broadway musical "Spring Awakening"), rock singer/songwriter David Poe ("Joy," "Blue Glass Fall") drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley's "Grace," Rufus Wainwright) songwriter/illustrator Morgan Taylor (creator of the popular children's project "Gustafer Yellowgold") and pianist Fil Krohnengold (Golden Smog, Gomez, Ween.)"[Poe] writes forensically exact lyrics with a dark, romantic sensibility, set to richly melodic, sensuously jazzy backing, singing in a flexible, warm, husky tone," writes London's Daily Telegraph.
Prodigy of Mobb Deep with Game Rebellion and more – September 19 @ 11:30pm
As part of Mobb Deep Prodigy spent years making a name for himself, alongside partner Havoc on acclaimed albums such as Hell on Earth (1996) and Murda Muzik (1999) before releasing his first solo album, HNIC, on Loud Records in late 2000. With this album Prodigy teamed up with a roster of outside producers such as the Alchemist and Rockwilder and proved himself to be a visionary solo artist. In early 2007, Prodigy signed a deal with Koch Records, to release two back-to-back albums this year. The first album ‘ROTM’ was recently released and has sold over 60,000 copies since April. Prodigy has won the hearts of both critics and fans alike, dropping harsh reality-based rhymes about the darker side of urban life with an unbalanced and sedate flow.
Dan Zanes and Friends: Sea Music! Sing-a-Long at the Spiegeltent!’ - September 23 @ 2:00pm & 4:00pm
Grammy-Award winning family favorite Dan Zanes makes his Spiegelworld premiere with an exclusive daytime show of sea songs inspired by traditional maritime music and family outings to the South Street Seaport. A rare, intimate concert appearance from one of the country’s most popular family bands, these historical songs are of the men who worked on the sea but they're so full of vigor that they continually inspire spontaneous musical outbursts from people in all stations of life.
Yard Dogs Road Show – September 24 @ 11:30pm
The Yard Dogs Road Show is cabaret, vaudeville and rock and roll. In the enchanting land of stage show entertainment ours is both pleasant and formidable terrain. We require a sensitivity to the subtle and the absurd. We lead the modern hobohemian on a visual and sonic journey through part of history that may or may not have existed – followed by an ambitious return to the emotional challenges of our punch-drunk contemporary world. It’s a true story on stage: sword swallowers, dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry - all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs cartoon heavy band. Yard Dogs Road Show is pure visual and sonic voodoo.
Jonathan Glickfeld – September 29th @ 5:30pm
Jonathan Glickfeld is an organic (pure & natural) crooner who will make you discover the "lost art of living". If you hanker to wear a tux while your cuff links sparkle. If you crave martinis or enjoy pouring your Jack Daniels on ice. If you used to woo at Jilly's, Patsy's or 21 then bring your pallies & let Jonathan Glickfeld "rig the tempo" with a series of saloon, torch and swing numbers, to welcome your night. Jonathan Glickfeld lives in piano bars around the globe.
