New York, NY (September 17, 2007)—NYC & Company, New York City’s official marketing and tourism organization, has launched NYC Sunday Stays, a hotel promotion offering discounts and specials for guests who spend a Sunday night at one of more than 24 participating hotels.



“This is a cost-effective initiative that will allow people to enjoy the City at a discount,” said George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company. “Whether a visitor is here for business or pleasure, NYC Sunday Stays encourages travelers to extend their trip through Sunday night or come a day early to spend Sunday night in the City at a considerable value.”



NYC Sunday Stays, effective Sunday, September 16, features a growing list of more than 24 New York City hotels. The promotion is an effort by the New York City to improve Sunday hotel occupancy rates, which traditionally drop an average of 20 points from Saturday night. The promotion also encourages business travelers to begin their stay a day early to enjoy all the City has to offer.



As part of the promotion, NYC & Company has partnered with participating hotels to reduce Sunday room rates by 20 to ­­­30 percent. In addition, guests will receive other hotel-specific amenities, including discounted room service and restaurant dining, complimentary breakfast, free parking, room upgrades and more.



“This program is primarily targets domestic visitors, including those from the tri-state New York area as well New York City residents looking for a good value in their own backyard,” added Fertitta.

Book Signing for Instructional Book on Surviving in New York City

Pay-It-Forward concept tied to the book.


NEW YORK CITY, September 15, 2007 -- If a person is new to the City and finds it a challenge to understand the customs, language and how to keep more of his money in his pocket then How to Survive New York City for the Newcomer is the book of choice authored by Deborah Torbert, published by Mother’s House Publishing, Colorado. The first book signing will be at the Excelsior Athletic Club, 301 E. 57th at 2nd Avenue, 5th Floor Thursday, September 27, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.


Torbert came to New York City from the West Coast to find work after a struggle rebuilding a business was cut down when the World Trade Center was attacked. When people were leaving the City in fear, Torbert came looking for work. During the succeeding years, she met people dealing with the same issues and having the same questions she had when she first came to New York. After meeting with tourists and newcomers in delis, on subway platforms and in a restaurant-bar called Mimi’s on 52nd, she realized that she could pass along what she had learned faster if she wrote a book directed to these new people. That was the birth of her first book. She subtitled it, to Reduce Stress, Loss of Money and Culture Shock to bring her point home. She explained, “When I travel back to the West Coast I invariably meet people who cannot wait to leave the city, that it did not meet their expectations. I feel so bad knowing that they could have totally enjoyed their trip here and want to return had they known what I tell them in my book. New York City is a too great a place to be misundertood.”

Publisher Jackie Haag of Mother’s House said, “We only publish books that are unique and have a purpose. Torbert’s style is very friendly and enjoyable to read. You feel you are having a cup of coffee
with a friend while listening to information you need. It is refreshing.”



How to Survive New York City for the Newcomer

Torbert was very happy when the National Artists Foundation, Henderson, NV, offered to fund her mother’s scholarship. “I had told my mother I wanted to do something for the women in my family, and if I can help a student get an education in the arts, then I feel I have helped my mother and grandmother,” she explained and added, “I wanted to target one-parent students because my dad died when I was a baby, and I know how hard it can be.”
Recent events have stalled the NAF funding, so Torbert is seeking other solutions. Recently she decided to add a ‘Survival T-Shirt’ on her website (survivingnyc.net) to raise funds. Part of the proceeds from the book already are earmarked for the scholarship in a kind of pay-it-forward concept. She is seeking a local institute to help fund the scholarship.


At the moment the book and key chain are being presented to hotels, bookstores, luggage stores in town and New York, New York Casino in Las Vegas. Realtors are interested in using the key chain as carry-along advertising for their services. Torbert’s primary desire is to get the information in the book to the people who can use it the most: tourists, students and new residents. She welcomes any help toward that goal or with the scholarship and will review all emails sent via her website http://www.survivingnyc.net.

Musical numbers for the 2007 Broadway on Broadway concert were announced today by The League of American Theatres and Producers and The Times Square Alliance. Hairspray's Lance Bass ("Corny Collins") will host 16th annual concert presented by Continental Airlines, to be held this Sunday, September 16 at 11:30 a.m in Times Square. The annual free outdoor concert brings together stars and performances from current and upcoming Broadway productions to celebrate the beginning of the Broadway season. IMG Media, the world's largest packager and producer of sports and live event television, is producing Broadway on Broadway for the first time.

Broadway's Biggest Fan Contest - Fans were asked to submit a sixty-second video showing why they are Broadway's biggest fan. Videos from 3 finalists will be broadcast on a jumbo screen in Times Square in front of a crowd of thousands. The three semi-finalists will be present and the ultimate winner will be determined by audience applause at the event.

Broadway Fan Zone will also make its debut this year, giving fans an opportunity to enjoy the concert from a VIP area right near the stage. It's an up-close and personal standing-room section available to the first 100 fans that arrive dressed as their favorite Broadway character.

80TH ANNUAL FEAST OF SAN GENNARO
TO BE HELD SEPTEMBER 13– 23, 2007
The 80th Annual Feast of San Gennaro, the oldest, biggest and best known Italian festival in the United States, will begin on Thursday, September 13, and continue through Sunday, September 23, 2007. This year’s “Feast of All Feasts,” presented annually since 1996 by Figli di San Gennaro (Children of San Gennaro), Inc., a local not-for-profit organization, is expected to attract 1.5 million visitors to Little Italy to celebrate the Patron Saint of Naples.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City, the Feast of San Gennaro features activities for the entire family that take place along Mulberry, Hester and Grand Streets, from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (midnight on Fridays and Saturdays). The local streets are decorated with festive banners and arches in green, white and red, the colors of the Italian flag. More than 40 of Little Italy's most famous Italian restaurants, many of them landmarks, roll out the red carpet for Feast visitors, and many provide outdoor dining facilities for the event, offering a variety of Italian specialty foods and pastries. Some restaurants even have strolling musicians to entertain their customers.
The festivities – including religious processions and parades, free musical entertainment, food stands and a professional cannoli-eating contest – are capped on Wednesday, September 19th with a celebratory Mass and candlelight procession as the Statue of the Saint is carried from its permanent home in Most Precious Blood Church at 109 Mulberry Street between Canal and Hester Streets through the streets of Little Italy.


In addition, there are more than 200 street vendors who set up shop along the Festival Streets selling a wide variety of goods and merchandise, including international foods, official Little Italy souvenir items and boutique merchandise including jewelry, accessories and clothing. The Feast also has a number of arcade games as well as many fun activities for the younger members of the family, including carnival rides.


Highlights of this year’s Feast include The Blessing of the Stands which officially starts the Feast on Thursday, September 13, at 6 PM when Father Fabian Grifone, pastor of Most Precious Blood Church, walks through the Feast blessing all the vendors and wishing them a successful Feast; The 6th Annual Cannoli Eating Competition on Friday, September 14, at 2 PM, featuring professional eaters from all over the world in a competition sanctioned by the International Professional Eaters Federation; The Grand Procession on Saturday, September 15, at 2 PM with actor Tony Lo Bianco as Grand Marshal; and The Celebratory Mass honoring San Gennaro on Wednesday, September 15, at 6 PM in Most Precious Blood Church, followed by the Religious Procession with the Statue at 7 PM through the streets of Little Italy.
A Performance Stage will be located at the corner of Grand and Centre Market Streets and will feature live entertainment and daily special events starting with the 6th Annual Cannoli Eating Competition on Friday, September 14, at 2 PM. There will be live concerts and radio broadcasts on this stage from 7 to 10 PM daily. WCBS1010 Radio will broadcast live from the stage on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 7 PM, hosted by deejay Joe Causi. Sirius Satellite Radio Network will also broadcast live from the stage on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7 PM with Bruce Morrow (Cousin Brucie) at the microphone. Vito Picone and the Elegants will perform at 4:30 PM that day. Other nights will feature broadcasts by radio stations Z100, KTU103.5 and Q104.3.
On Wednesday, Sept. 19, there will also be a Special Memorial Concert for Luciano Pavarotti on the Performance stage featuring professional opera and Italian folk singers including the top finalists in this year’s Little Italy Vocal Competitions for Tenors and Sopranos. Those performing include tenors Eapen Leubner and Raffaele Sepe, and sopranos Jennifer Rowley, Anya Matanovic, Sungji Kim and Nicole Macagnone.
Other Special Events: Induction Ceremony of Tony Lo Bianco into the Little Italy Wall of Fame on Saturday, September 15, at 1 PM, and a Preview Screening for the benefit of Figli di San Gennaro of a new independent feature film Everyone Wants to Be Italian at the Angelika Film Center on Wednesday, September 12, at 7:


The Feast of San Gennaro first took place in New York City on September 19, 1926 when newly arrived immigrants from Naples, Italy, settled in crowded apartment houses along Mulberry Street in a section that became known as Little Italy. In addition to seeking a better quality of life in America for their families, these new Americans also brought with them a rich culture and deep religious heritage including the centuries-old tradition they had followed in Italy to celebrate the day in 305 A.D. when Saint Gennaro was martyred for the faith.
In the years since, the Feast has grown from a one-day street celebration to a gala 11-day event. On September 19, a Religious Procession, including the Statue of San Gennaro, winds along the length of Mulberry and Mott Streets, between Canal and Houston Streets. The procession begins immediately following a 6 PM Celebratory Mass at Most Precious Blood Church, the National Shrine of San Gennaro. This year this procession will be led by Father Fabian Grifone, pastor of Most Precious Blood Church and other members of his religious order.
Although a party atmosphere permeates the Feast, it is really a religious celebration that has become a proud tradition handed down from generation to generation of Italian-Americans. For 11 days and nights the streets of Little Italy are filled with joyous people of all ethnic and racial backgrounds eating fabulous Italian cuisine, listening to great live entertainment and just having a wonderful time. But there is a religious purpose behind the festivities which is never forgotten, and that becomes evident on September 19th, the Saint's Day.
The continued growth of the Feast over the past ten years has enabled Figli di San Gennaro, Inc. to donate more than $1.6-million to worthy causes providing valuable services for children and education in the Little Italy community and beyond. At the conclusion of each annual Feast, sizeable donations are distributed to scores of worthy organizations in all five boroughs and the tri-state area to help the needy and the young. No other public festival in America donates more money to charity than does the Feast of San Gennaro.

I'm Touched Beyond Words!

Sometimes people can even take my breath away. I have always wanted an Avenue Q puppet and have been searching for one for many months. I wrote about wanting one for my Birthday and someone very special gave me one. I am still speechless.
This person is a Prince among men and I will never forget the nice thing he did for me.

It really moved me. In addition this cast member plays Trekkie and Nicky in Avenue Q and was hysterically funny tonight and in Forbidden Broadway. I will always be touched by his very generous and thoughtful gift. It made me cry.

Rockers on Broadway was founded by Donnie Kehr in 1993 during the Broadway run of The Who’s Tommy, in which he appeared, Broadway Rockers was inspired by Pete Townshend, who wanted to give musical theatre performers the opportunity to experience the feeling of singing with a rock band in a concert style venue, so they could understand and transfer the rawness of that edge to the stage.

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director) announces Beth Fowler (Inherit the Wind, The Boy from Oz, Beauty and the Beast) will play Hortense in Zorba, the first of the four show in the Fall 2007 Musicals in Mufti Series -- the York’s acclaimed series of musical theatre gems in staged concert performances. The Fall Series will celebrate the work of playwright Joseph Stein. Zorba, which began rehearsals Monday, September 10, will play September 14, 15 and 16 at the Theatre at Saint Peters (54th Street, Just East of Lexington Ave). Tickets are $35. Beth Fowler joins the previously announced, Jeff McCarthy (Urinetown, Pirate Queen), who made his Broadway debut as Nikos in the 1983 Zorba revival and will play the title role. The cast also includes Emily Skinner (Side Show, The Full Monty) as The Leader, Crista Moore (Big, Gypsy) as The Widow, Aaron Ramey (Thoroughly Modern Millie) as Nikos, and Robin De Jesus (In The Heights) as Mikiko. The ensemble includes Raymond Bokhour, Jane Brockman, Joseph Cullinane, Vince D’Elia, Denis Lambert, Ken McMullen, Tina Stafford, and Deone Zanotto.



Zorba has a book by Joseph Stein, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. Zorba is directed by Steven Yuhasz (Lover, Liar, Lady…The Women of Kander & Ebb, All About Us). Patrick Vaccariello (A Chorus Line) is the Music Director.



Zorba is adapted from the novel “Zorba the Greek” by Nikos Kazantzakis. The show is set in Crete in 1924 and is about the friendship between Zorba and Nikos, a young American student who has inherited an abandoned mine on Crete, and their romantic relationships with a local widow and French woman – Hortense, respectively.



The novel was turned into a film in 1964, produced and directed by Michael Cacoyannis. Anthony Quinn starred in the title role, with Lila Kedrova played Madame Hortense. The movie won three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress (Lila Kedrova), Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.



The musical was directed and produced by Harold Prince and choreographed by Ronald Field. The show opened at the Imperial Theatre on November 16, 1968, ran for 305 performances and starred Herschel Bernardi in the title role and Maria Karnilova as Madame Hortense. The show was nominated for eight Tony Awards and won a Tony Award for best Scenic Design. It also won three Drama Desk Awards – for Outstanding Lyrics, Costume Design and Set Design.



A revival opened at the Broadway Theatre on October 16, 1983 and ran for 362 performances. This production brought together many of the film’s team: Anthony Quinn in the title role and Lila Kedrova as Madame Hortense; it was directed by Michael Cacoyannis and choreographed by Graciele Daniele. Ensemble members included Rob Marshall and Robert Westenberg. Lila Kedrova won a 1984 Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Best Featured Actress. Cast recordings were made of both the original and revival of Zorba.



Following Zorba, the Musicals in Mufti lineup is as follows: Enter Laughing: The Musical which will run September 28-30 and will be directed by Stuart Ross, with Matt Castle as Music Director. The Body Beautiful will run October 12-14 and will be directed by David Glenn Armstrong, with John Bell as music director. The Baker’s Wife is the last in the series, will run October 26-28 and will be directed by Gordon Greenberg with Mark Hartman as Music Director. All shows will play five performances: Friday at 8 pm, Saturday at 2:30 pm & 8 pm, and Sunday at 2:30 pm & 7:30 pm. Audience discussions will follow both matinees.

York previously celebrated Joseph Stein in the Musicals in Mufti Fall 2006 Series (Take Me Along, Carmelina, Plain & Fancy). Stein won the Tony Award and Drama Critics Circle Award for Fiddler on the Roof. His other musicals include: Zorba (Tony nom., Drama Critics Circle Award), Rags (Tony nom.), The Baker's Wife (Laurence Olivier Award, London), Juno, Take Me Along, Irene; The King of Hearts and So Long, 174th Street. He also co-authored, with Alan Jay Lerner, the musical Carmelina and, with Will Glickman, Mr. Wonderful (starring Sammy Davis, Jr.) and Plain and Fancy. His plays include Enter Laughing, Before the Dawn and Mrs. Gibbons' Boys. He began his career in TV and radio, writing for "Sid Caesar Show," "Your Show of Shows," "The Henry Morgan Show" and many others including Tallulah Bankhead, Phil Silvers, Jackie Gleason and Zero Mostel. He wrote the screenplays of Enter Laughing and Fiddler on the Roof, for which he won the Screen Writers Guild Award. He is currently working on All About Us, the musical version of The Skin of Our Teeth with a score by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and another musical, yet to be announced. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild Council and is married to Elisa Stein, a psychotherapist.

About Meow Meow

Meow Meow has wowed audiences with her own brand of vamped-up kamikaze cabaret, French fishnet satire and performance art exotica around the globe. Her solo show was chosen for David Bowie’s High Line Festival NYC ‘07 (alongside Air, Arcade Fire, Laurie Anderson and Ricky Gervais). She collaborated most recently at NY’s Hiro Ballroom with Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus creator and director John Cameron Mitchell.



Meow Meow has worked with London’s Opera Factory, toured Europe and Australia repeatedly with contemporary opera ensemble Elision (Liza Lim), Johannesburg’s Robyn Orlin City Dance Theatre (Paris/Berlin), New York’s Anthony Coleman (John Zorn), The John Cage Trust, John Jesurun, Mikel Rouse and Thomas M. She has played The Spiegeltent at the Dublin, Brighton, Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland and NY Festivals, and created a number of works for the U.S Time-Based Arts Festival, Oregon. She’s a frequent guest in the Spiegeltent show La Clique, Absinthe, and Weimar New York with Justin Bond (Kiki and Herb), Julie Atlas Muz, Penny Arcade and Taylor Mac.



Meow is a recipient of numerous awards including for Theatre in Berlin, The Dance Paris residency, and the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art Award (New York). This year she will collaborate with China’s most controversial contemporary dancer and first acknowledged transsexual Jin Xing in Shanghai, and create works for a number of international arts festivals in the US, France and Australia. She has just performed a sold out special Mardi Gras season of Beyond Glamour with Pink Martini’s Thomas M. Lauderdale for the Sydney Opera House and recorded their first album together in Oregon, “Here Kitty, Kitty…The Lost Sessions”. Her recent Edinburgh Fringe debut at the Bosco Theatre and Spiegeltent with Lance Horne on piano sold out, was extended, and received a five star review in the London Times.



She has numerous unsavory and crazed stalkers.
